AIHL 2015 – Round 1 Preview

It’s finally time for round one of your new favorite Ice Hockey Championship. (Yes, I’ll probably keep calling it Ice Hockey, Australia are really good at field hockey, old habits die hard you know.)

Hopefully you have use our handy chart to pick your team, you’ve followed them on all the requisite social media channels, and you sort-of understand our slightly different rules.

Let me give you the lowdown on the weekends games.

Sydney Ice Dogs at Melbourne Ice Saturday 25 – 5:00pm local (Click here to convert)

No available livestream for this game.

The Ice are still smarting from last years Grand Final loss to their cross-town rivals the Melbourne Mustangs. They’ve been training hard and will be looking to come out of the gate strong. The Ice easily had the measure of the Ice Dogs last year (except for one memorable occasion), winning three out of their four match ups but the Ice Dogs are young and hungry and they have Import Goalie Matt Grogan in net so expect him to be an influence on the team.

Who to watch: SID Matt Grogan, SID Daniel Pataky, MI Tommy Powell, MI Lliam Webster

Adelaide Adrenaline at Newcastle North Stars Saturday 25 – 5:00pm local(Click here to convert time)

Livestream via Youtube

Newcastle North Stars are coming off a tidy win in the preseason Wilson Cup and are looking sharp after a messy 2014. Adelaide didn’t make many changes to the 2014 squad that failed to make the finals so unless improvements were made int he off-season it’s ahrd to see them taking this one.

Who to watch: NNS Hayden Sheards, AA Tyler Grove

Sydney Bears at CBR Brave Saturday 25 – 5:30pm local(Click here to convert time)

Livestreams will have extended pregame show 1 hour before puck drop. (4.30pm local)

The Brave have made changes in the offseason including bringing in forward Kelly Geoffrey from the Ontario Hockey League. The brave also picked up a number of experienced IceDogs during the break and look to be solidifying their chances for a 2015 finals run. The Bears showed moments of brilliance in the Wilson cup so this is sure to be a matchup worth watching.

Who to watch: CBR Kelly Geoffrey, CBR Mark Rumukainnen, SB Spencer Austin, SB Joe Harcharik.

Sydney Ice Dogs at Melbourne Mustangs Saturday 25 – 4:00pm local (Click here to convert)

As the 2015 Goodall Cup Champions, the Mustangs will be looking to stamp their authority on the league early this year. Traditionally they get off to a slow start but they are well aware they they are the team with targets on their backs this year. They should take the Ice Dogs easily but you can never count out an underdog!

Who to watch: MM Sean Jones, MM Pat O’Kane

Bye: Perth Thunder.
