Whoa, is it Round Two already? When did that happen?
Welcome back to Cup Check! The Other Half’s crowdsourced 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs game recaps! We pay more attention to some games than others, not gonna lie. We’ll work on that. High fives for Beth Machlan who took one for the team and watched the Rangers, and as always for our BAMF artist Christy Kondo who does our AHmazing doodles.
At the end of the night the basics looked like this:
Anaheim did their damndest to shut out Calgary, but Sam Bennett was having none of that, (they still lost, though), and Joel Ward decided that the NY Rangers and Washington Capitals were not going into overtime if he had anything to say about it! He said it with TWO seconds to spare and Washington is up 1-0 to start the series.
How about them details:
New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals – Round 2, Game 1
-(WSH) PPG – Alex Ovechkin at 18:13 in the 1st period
-(NYR) Jesper Fast at 15:21 in the 3rd
-(WSH) Joel Ward at 19:58 — YES, 19:58! — in the 3rd
Goalies: Lundqvist stopped 27 of 29; Holtby stopped 28 of 29.
According to NBC, this series is apparently The Ovi Show. Although ostensibly impartial, on-air commentary was all Ovi, all the time, with occasional breaks to marvel at the size of Tom Wilson in a way that got really, really creepy after a while, guys. Seriously, go write some fic and get it out of your system. This was immediately followed by Barry Trotz comparing Ovi to Messier, for any Rangers fans whose faces hadn’t completely melted yet.
Well, um, Ovi. (BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT.) Gorgeous snipe …

… followed by direct taunt to Lundqvist: “All series, baby. All series.”
As a Rangers fan (who happens to love the Caps, just not right now, and definitely not if I have to hear Pierre gulping his own drool for six more games), where do I start? The near-constant sheer clumsiness?
Every zone entry is a new little nightmare.

The possibility that someone, somewhere, is sticking pins in Rangers dolls?
Did Yandle just have a stroke mid stride?

Niklas Backstrom’s elbow to the head of Dan Boyle was icky and uncalled for, and led to that literally last-second goal. (I never claimed to be impartial, ok? WORST.)
Rangers 1, Capitals 2, giving the Capitals a 1-0 series lead
This series continues Saturday, May 2nd, at 12:30 PM ET in New York.
Calgary Flames vs Anaheim Ducks – Round 2, Game 1
-(ANA) Beleskey, 10:17 in the 1st
-(ANA) Maroon, 13:11 in the 1st
-(ANA) Perry, 2:13 in the 2nd
-(ANA) Etem, 10:11 in the 2nd
-(ANA) Perry, :44 in the 3rd
-(ANA) Getzlaf, 2:32 in the 3rd
-(CGY) Bennett, 9:16 in the 3rd (good try though, bro.)
Goalies: Hiller stopped 11 of 14 and Ramo stopped 18 of 21, Andersen stopped 23 of 24
The Ducks slotting two goals per period is notable. Sam Bennett’s effort to at least get the goose egg off the scoreboard is very notable.
Ducks 6, Flames 1, giving the Ducks a 1-0 series lead
This series continues Sunday, May 3rd, at 10:00 PM ET in Anaheim
We’ll be back tomorrow with actual notes for both of tonight’s games. Probably.
