Cup Check! May 10, 2015

It’s Cup Check May 10, and the second round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs are drawing to a close. Janice Rochford, Sheila Lane, Beth Boyle Machlan, Amber French, and Allyson Z. rounded up the details for us and at the end of the night the basics looked like this:

Despite a late push from Washington, Beth’s Rangers held strong and forced Game Seven, and while Calgary burned bright, it wasn’t quite bright enough – Anaheim will be facing Chicago in the third round. Let the bird jokes commence!

How about them details:

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals – Round 2, Game 6

Goals:
-(NYR) Chris Kreider at 0:40 in the 1st Period

-(NYR) Chris Kreider at 19:59:7 in the 1st Period

-(WSH) Jason Chimera at 0:28 in the 2nd Period

-(NYR) Rick Nash at 00:54 in the 3rd Period

-(NYR) Dan Boyle at 4:24 in the 3rd Period

-(WSH) Evgeny Kuznetsov at 7:40 in the 3rd Period

-(WSH) Joel Ward at 10:33 in the 3rd Period

Goalies: NYR Lundqvist stopped 42 of 45, WSH Holtby stopped 24 of 28.

And he didn’t play, but here’s Prince Goalbuster comforting his King after the onslaught:

Notables:

Lundqvist Saves.

Ovechkin hit on McDonagh:

(McDonagh was back a few minutes later.)

Factually incorrect penalty against NYR:

Best:

Impressive, but oddly specific.

Worst:

Something about Chris Kreider brings out the slash in everyone.

Rangers 4, Capitals 3, giving the Rangers a 4-3 series lead

This series ends, one way or another, Wednesday 5/13 at 7:30 Eastern in New York.

Calgary Flames at Anaheim Ducks – Round 2, Game 5

Goals:

-(CGY) PPG Jiri Hudler 10:43 in the 1st
-(ANA) PPG Ryan Kesler 4:59 in the 2nd
-(CGY) Johnny Gaudreau 5:55 in the 2nd

-(ANA) PPG Matt Belesky 0:59 in the 3rd

-(ANA) Corey Perry 2:26 in the 2nd

Goalies: Ramo (CGY) stopped 44 of 47, Andersen (ANA) stopped 17 of 19.

Notables:

The last time Calgary won in Anaheim? 2006.

Maybe because they haven’t slept since then. DEAR GOD WHAT IS THAT THING.

“I broke a few windows in the windshield factory…” Flames coach Bob Hartley on his younger players making mistakes.

Perry terrifies crowd with a hit that wonkified his knee.

He returned to take a test lap a few minutes later to the sound of the crowd chanting his name, and returned to play in the 3rd.

Ramo stopped 44 out of 47 – You gotta feel for the guy, he had a hell of a night.

Best:
It’s a pretty good group hug- even if it’s anaheim ;)

Worst:

The Ducks take the series 4 – 1 and will meet the Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final.

(Ed. note: Was that mean? That feels mean.)

Once the points were tallied and the soundbytes given The Other Half took a vote and we agree:

What impressed us: Beth’s Rangers. These are not guys who fall behind and then roll over and give up. Game Seven should be a good one.
What distressed us: THAT DUCK, YO. THAT DUCK IS VERY DISTRESSING.

There’s no hockey tonight, but we’ll probably all hang out in our chat room anyway, because we’re at risk of becoming weirdly codependent after WEEKS AND WEEKS of ENDLESS TOGETHERNESS. Janice will be back on Wednesday with the details of whether or not the Habs are still hanging in there.
