Cup Check! May 16, 2015

Welcome to The Other Half’s crowdsourced playoff-recap for April 16th, 2015. Our resident Rangers homer Beth Boyle Machlan was chiefly responsible for this recap, with attempts at neutrality coming from Eliza Eaton-Stern.

At the end of the night the basics looked like this:

The Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final.

How about them details:

Tampa Bay Lightning vs New York Rangers

Here we go, with the Rangers South vs. Bolts North (nope, nobody calls them that), as the biggest trade drama of 2014, when the two teams exchanged captains, becomes the battle for the Eastern Conference Championship in 2015. The series is notable also for the fact that no team this season managed to show the Rangers the door — even in their own house — as consistently as the Lightning, who beat them three times in a sad stretch of November/December. (Yes, Fishsticks fans, the Islanders also beat the Rangers three times during the regular season, but then the Rangers came back and won twice, and now the Islanders are golfing, so that’s enough out of you.)

-(NYR) Derek Stepan at 19:47 in the 2nd period.
-(TBL) PPG – Ondrej Palat at 6:45 in the 3rd.
-(NYR) Dominic Moore at 17:35 in the 3rd.

Goalies: Ben Bishop stopped 28 of 30; Henrik Lundqvist stopped 23 of 24.

Then Hank wore this suit. Girls (and boys — hell, everybody), hit your hallelujahs.

Gorgeous glove save by Bish on Hayes:

Tampa Bay continue to court the big referee in the sky:

Oh, and as for those former Rangers now on the other bench, Lundqvist had this to say:

Also, apparently the Rangers only play one goal games now, always. While it’s better than losing, it doesn’t do much to help the blood pressure for those of us playing along at home.

Palat’s PPG was pretty much everything a goal should be.

This celly by Dom Moore, the perfect bottom-six player who grinds hard every game and deserves all the good things in the world.

Ryan Callahan’s decision to play five days after an emergency appendectomy. COME ON, HOCKEY. STOP WITH THE STUPID. Last thing we need is people’s organs and stuff falling out on the ice. THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Will folks remember that the Rangers GWG came after what may have been the worst 3 on 1 of all time? You know when you go into another room of your house for a thing, but then you get there and you can’t remember what the thing was, or why you wanted it? Well, imagine that, except you are the Rangers, and the room is the offensive zone, and the thing is the puck, and you wanted it so that you can score a goal and win the Stanley Cup. BUT THEN YOU FORGET. MSG actually MOANED.

Rangers 2 Bolts 1, giving the Rangers a 1-0 series lead.

This series continues Monday at 7:30 in New York.

Once the points were tallied and the soundbytes given The Other Half took a vote and we agree:

What impressed us: The goalie duels in the Eastern Conference are mighty fun to watch. This looks set to be another great one.
What distressed us: All these one goal games are probably a bit much for the collective blood pressure of the city of New York. We’re worried.
